I work in traditional soft pastels on paper.
Pastels are pure powdered (dry) pigments - crushed minerals from the earth. With a drop of a gum binder the pigment is rolled into a dry stick. These sticks of color are applied to the painting by hand one at a time and in
just the right order to achieve the desired look. If the colors are applied in the wrong order, the painting loses its vibrancy. Reworking or correcting a pastel painting can be difficult since the paper can only hold so much pigment.
Quality pastels, such as those I use in the work, are the purest form of pigment or paint available and date back to the 16th century. When protected by glass, pastel is the most permanent of all media since it never cracks, cures, darkens or yellows. Pastel paintings reflect light like a prism. No other medium has the same color power.
